Impact of Iran Conflict on Aviation Industry: A Global Perspective

The intensifying conflict involving Iran is presenting the aviation industry with its most significant geopolitical challenge since the Covid-19 pandemic. This situation has led to a loss of over $50 billion in airline market value, disrupted tens of thousands of flights globally, and sharply increased fuel and insurance costs across international routes.

Recent operational data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicates that airlines have already revised their near-term capacity expansion forecasts downwards due to widespread airspace closures in the Middle East, which have forced airlines to reroute traffic between Europe and Asia and suspend essential regional services.

In March 2026, global capacity growth slowed to 3.3 percent year on year, a significant drop from earlier forecasts of 5.2 percent, which IATA attributes to “substantial capacity cuts” directly linked to the ongoing conflict.

“The safety of civil aviation is paramount, and the conflict is forcing airlines to make significant operational adjustments,” stated Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General. He highlighted the increasing pressure on both passenger connectivity and cargo logistics across Gulf hubs.

The airspace closures across several Middle East corridors have led to the cancellation or disruption of tens of thousands of flights in March, with airlines required to take longer detours over Central Asia, the Caucasus, and southern Europe. This rerouting has resulted in increased fuel consumption, longer travel times, and heightened aircraft utilization strain across intercontinental fleets.

Since the conflict began in late February, airline stocks have collectively lost more than $53 billion in market value, while jet fuel prices have surged by up to 80 percent during peak volatility, briefly nearing $175 per barrel in some trading periods. This spike has significantly increased operating costs for long-haul carriers that are already operating on thin margins.

The aviation sector's strategic vulnerability is evident in its reliance on Gulf airspace as the main link connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. Restrictions on traditional east-west routes have compelled airlines like Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways to adjust schedules and redeploy aircraft on alternative routes to maintain connectivity.

Cargo operations have been particularly impacted. IATA has warned that disruptions at Gulf logistics hubs are slowing high-value freight movements between Asia and Europe, endangering supply chains for electronics, pharmaceuticals, and automotive parts. Freight yields, which had stabilized post-pandemic, are rising again as available capacity tightens.

European carriers face additional risks, as approximately 25 to 30 percent of their jet fuel supply comes from the Gulf region. Analysts warn that any prolonged disruption to refining or shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could keep aviation fuel prices elevated well into the summer travel season.

Industry analysts suggest that the conflict has disrupted what was anticipated to be aviation's strongest growth phase since 2022. As 2026 began, airlines were looking forward to strong long-haul demand, bolstered by resilient tourism flows and robust Gulf hub connectivity. Instead, increasing geopolitical uncertainty is forcing carriers to reevaluate route economics, fleet deployment strategies, and seasonal capacity plans.

The outlook has become more uncertain following Donald Trump's indication that military operations against Iran may intensify, raising the likelihood of extended airspace instability across one of the world's most critical aviation corridors. Markets are interpreting this risk escalation as increasing the probability of continued route disruptions through the second quarter.

Aircraft utilization rates are already declining across some intercontinental fleets, and insurers have increased war-risk premiums for flights operating near conflict zones. Leasing markets are also showing early signs of caution as airlines rethink expansion timelines amid uncertainties regarding long-haul profitability.

Despite the immediate turbulence, Gulf carriers are expected to remain more resilient than many of their global counterparts due to their geographic advantages, diversified route structures, and strong governmental support. Airlines such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia have shown operational flexibility by swiftly adjusting flight paths and maintaining connectivity across alternative corridors linking Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Overall, the latest indicators suggest that the Iran conflict is becoming a structural risk event for global aviation — one that could delay capacity expansion, raise fares, and alter long-haul route economics if instability continues into the latter half of 2026.
